The Center for Birds of Prey serves as a significant resource for understanding avian predators and their vital roles within ecosystems. Hosting nearly 50 species, it proudly represents one of North America’s largest collections of living birds of prey, providing valuable educational opportunities about these fascinating creatures.

Wild birds, acting as sentinel species, are critical indicators of environmental health. Their abundance and sensitivity allow them to reflect the overall state of ecosystems and biodiversity. Crucially, the study of wild bird populations not only informs conservation efforts but also highlights potential implications for human health, making their preservation a pressing concern.

Operating as an umbrella organization, the Avian Conservation Center encompasses various specialized divisions, including the Center for Birds of Prey, the Avian Medical Center, and the South Carolina Oil Spill Treatment Facility. This holistic approach underlines the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing education, research, and conservation.

The Avian Medical Center operates year-round, supported by over 60 dedicated volunteers. It serves as a state-of-the-art facility treating over 600 injured birds annually. Since its inception, the Center has successfully treated more than 7,000 birds, demonstrating its vital role in rehabilitation efforts.

Among its notable projects is the South Carolina Oil Spill Treatment Facility, a unique resource on the eastern seaboard established through a $1.8 million grant from U.S. Fish and Wildlife and South Carolina DNR in 2005. This facility emphasizes the Center's commitment to addressing environmental challenges that affect avian populations.

Research initiatives and field studies complement the Center’s medical and educational programs, reinforcing their shared mission to protect wild bird populations and their habitats. Positioned in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, just 16 miles north of Charleston, the Center offers engaging programs featuring guided tours and flight demonstrations that allow visitors to observe raptors in action.

The flight demonstrations are frequently regarded as a highlight for attendees, showcasing hawks, falcons, owls, eagles, kites, and vultures in a breathtaking aerial display. Witnessing these birds exhibit their natural flying and hunting behaviors offers a profound insight into their evolutionary adaptations and provides a memorable experience for all ages.

The Center is organized as a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that depends significantly on contributions from members, corporate sponsors, foundations, and a committed team of volunteers to sustain its operations. Opportunities for support include membership, planned gifts, corporate sponsorships, and in-kind donations.
